Melody is the Co-Founder of Supersubs, an early-stage startup that aims to address the pain point of subletting for college students. Melody and her team are currently participating in the College New Venture Challange at the University of Chicago where they are incubating their idea through the proof of concept stage. They are developing a two-sided marketplace tailored specifically to the needs of students looking to sublet to other peers during summers and semesters abroad.
In their process of customer discovery, they realized that they needed to better understand the perspective of landlords involved in the subletting process. Before using Vintro, they were at an impasse because their immediate network did not include anyone who had knowledge of that industry which was pivotal towards informing product decisions. When Melody got selected to join Vintro's beta testing she was excited to connect with Jose, a reviewer who had a background in commercial real estate and who was a local Chicago landlord.
Supersubs Pitch Video
Melody's pitch video is a great example of how to cleanly convey a story and start a conversation without needing high budget special effects, or equipment. She presents 4 key elements that we outline in our great pitch guidelines clearly:
- Her background
- Her project
- Her progress
- The ask she has of the reviewer
Jose's Review For Supersubs
Jose's review is an example of a strong review because it followed our best practices for reviews framework. The idea was interesting to him and he explained why it caught his attention. He gave her actionable feedback on what next steps she should take and how he sees some of the challenges they need to think through. He was also clear on how he was interested in getting involved and what next steps they should take.
After watching each other's videos, the two exchanged contact information over the in-app chat and arranged an in-person meeting with Jose, Melody, and her co-founder Luke. After the group met we reached out to them to see how they felt the process went:
"My experience receiving a Vintro from Melody & Luke was a pleasure. I barely knew anything about them, but the platform has a way of cutting through to the essential. I felt connected to them as individuals and their project and was excited to meet them in person to talk further.
The meeting was fluid. I think the matchmaking element certainly played a part. We talked through their ideas & set a direction. Clarity of mind really helps at the startup level. I welcome continuous engagement with Melody, Luke & their team. I'm just happy to be able to serve them through my experience & capabilities."
"Vintro not only gave us the opportunity to connect with an insightful mentor like Jose, but the Vintro format also allowed us to seamlessly connect when we physically met – the immediate sense of connection helped facilitate productive discussion. We’ve learned a lot from our Vintro and eventual meeting with Jose. His background in real estate gave us valuable insights about different directions we could go into at this early stage. We really appreciate that Jose also kindly offered not only his advice which we had asked for, but also offered to connect us with other experts in the field. Jose’s enthusiasm about our startup idea really shone through, and he asked us great questions that made us reflect further about our idea and execution. We are excited about Jose’s further mentorship!"
